Led by Russia-born vocalist and cultural and political firebrand Larissa Stupar, Welsh death metal quintet Venom Prison subvert the misogyny inherent in the genre with a message of empowerment and catharsis.
Stupar, a self-described vegan straight-edge anarchist, founded the group in 2014 after leaving German hardcore unit Wolf Down. Employing a lethal mix of breakdowns and blastbeats, the band, which also includes guitarists Ben Thomas and Ash Gray (ex-Brutality Will Prevail), bassist Mike Jefferies, and drummer Jay Pipprell (Ninkharsag, ex-Unsanctum), debuted their modernist deathcore sound on the Primal Chaos EP in 2015. They inked a deal with Prosthetic Records the following year and released their full-length debut, Animus. Venom Prison issued their sophomore effort, the uncompromising Samsara, in 2019, with the like-minded Primeval arriving just one year later. ~ James Christopher Monger
