The Accidentals are an indie folk trio from Traverse City, Michigan who construct melodic, instrumentally diverse tunes. Former high-school classmates, the Accidentals formed in 2011 when cellist Katie Larson and violinist Savannah Buist started playing together for a school project at Traverse City West Senior High School. Daughters of professional pianist fathers and vocalist mothers, both Larson and Buist grew up on a variety of music genres and count the Beatles, Andrew Bird, St. Vincent, and Sufjan Stevens among their many inspirations. Also both proficient on multiple instruments, they auditioned in 2012 for a new singer/songwriter program at Interlochen Arts Academy, were accepted, and swiftly began collaborating. They self-produced and released their first album, Tangled Red and Blue, that same year. Their second album, Bittersweet, arrived just a year later while they were still in high school.
During those first two years together, they toured regularly, earning support spots for the likes of Andrew Bird, Rodriguez, Brandi Carlile, and Rusted Root, among others; guested on several other albums; wrote a film score for the indy film One Simple Question; and licensed their music for commercials, other independent films, and music compilations. Their song "The Silence" came to the attention of celebrated singer/songwriter/producer Marshall Crenshaw and his production-company partner, Grammy-winning producer/engineer Stewart Lerman (Beck, Patti Smith), who together signed the group to a four-album production deal. The women added drummer Michael Dause to the lineup in 2014, and amid extensive touring the trio began working on new songs.
When their contract came up for renegotiation, the band opted out of the long-term deal, instead self-releasing the Parking Lot EP as a free download in 2016. The Accidentals found a new home at Sony Masterworks in January 2017 as they put the finishing touches on a third long-player that included guests such as Jenny Conlee (the Decemberists) and Keller Williams. Co-produced by the band and Jason Lehning (Guster, Ivan & Alyosha), Odyssey arrived that summer. ~ Marcy Donelson
