Acerca de Project Grand Slam
An eclectic crossover jazz outfit, Project Grand Slam is the primary inspiration of journeyman bassist and bandleader Robert Miller. A veteran East Coast player, Miller founded PGS in the mid-2000s as a further outgrowth of his decades-long work leading jazz and fusion bands. While they have explored a wide array of groove-oriented jazz and Latin rhythms, the group embraced a funk and classic rock-influenced sound with the addition of vocalist Ziarra Washington on 2017's The PGS Experience.
Prior to putting Project Grand Slam together, the New York-born Miller studied with legendary John Coltrane bassist Jimmy Garrison, and led his own fusion and jazz outfits on the East Coast for over 30 years. As the leader of PGS, Miller has collaborated with an ever evolving lineup of musicians, including at various times guitarist Tristan Clark, keyboardist Baden Goyo, saxophonist Mario Castro, drummer Joel E. Mateo, and percussionist Guillermo Barron Rios. The group debuted in 2008 with Play, and followed in 2012 with Spring Dance. Their third album, Made in New York, arrived in 2015 and featured a guest appearance by singer Kat Robichaud.
The Latin and Caribbean-influenced The Queen's Carnival appeared in 2016. The following year, Miller returned with The PGS Experience, which introduced band vocalist Ziarra Washington and featured contributions by saxophonist Mindi Abair. The band also widened its profile around this time, opening for established artists like Edgar Winter, Boney James, Blues Traveler, and others. In 2018, Project Grand Slam released Trippin', which found Miller pushing the band in an even stronger funk-rock direction. ~ Matt Collar
