Acerca de Pkew Pkew Pkew
The gruff, pop-punk of Canadian four-piece Pkew Pkew Pkew first burst onto the scene in 2012 but it was the release of their 2016 self-titled LP, which featured the anthemic singalong "Mid 20's Skateboarder," that brought them to wider attention.
Formed in Toronto by Mike Warne (vocals, guitar), Ryan McKinley (guitars/vocals), Emmett O'Reilly (bass/vocals), and David Laino (drums), and inspired by likes of the Bouncing Souls, Rancid, and snotty pop-punk itself, the group released their debut EP, Red Ass, in 2012. Their debut album, Glory Days, followed a year later and their raucous, beer-soaked live shows, propelled by their anthemic singalongs, became a hot ticket. After numerous tours in Canada and the U.S. and support slots for the likes of the Hold Steady, Iron Chic, and PUP, the group delivered their sophomore album, the self-titled full-length, in 2016 for Royal Mountain. The following year, the group signed to SideOneDummy, which reissued the album as + One with an extra track. 2018 saw Pkew Pkew Pkew back out on the road, playing dates in Canada, the U.S., and for the first time, Europe.
Although their previous material had followed the same trajectory involving beer, pizza, nights out, and skateboarding, the band grew up a little, and for their third album they brought in the Hold Steady's Craig Finn for advice on writing. With Finn's band being a major influence on Warne's own writing, the resulting album, 2019's Optimal Lifestyles, took their snotty pop-punk and turned it on its head, producing something more akin to the Menzingers, Spanish Love Songs, and Titus Andronicus. ~ Rich Wilson
