Orchestra of the Americas
Acerca de Orchestra of the Americas
The Orchestra of the Americas was primarily a studio ensemble that recorded numerous successful discs of light classical music and musical theater. Active from the 1980s through the early 2000s, it should not be confused with the orchestra of the same name, founded as the Youth Orchestra of the Americas by conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto in 2002, or with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas founded by conductor Alondra de la Parra and active in New York City around 2010.
The confusion deepens when one considers that both groups called Orchestra of the Americas were headquartered in Mexico City. The earlier of the two orchestras was primarily oriented toward the recording studio, and specifically toward the recording of film soundtracks and anthologies of Broadway musical theater material. The orchestra first appeared on a recording in 1987, with an album devoted to the soundtracks of a pair of films, Hanna's War and Assisi Underground. The orchestra recorded several albums of conventional repertory with violinist Ruggiero Ricci in the early 1990s and released albums of Mexican and Brazilian symphonic music, but most of its recorded output after that was devoted to Broadway and film music. The Orchestra of the Americas was notable for its ongoing association with Paul Freeman, one of the first African American conductors to achieve a successful career in the U.S. He led the group in a series of Broadway recordings, each entitled "Aspects of," followed by the names of a series of musicals. These were released on the Intersound label.
In the late 1990s, conductor Bill Broughton led the orchestra in a series of film music anthologies. Among the orchestra's highest-profile recordings was that of the soundtrack of the film Heart of the Ocean, composed by Hollywood heavyweight James Horner. The Orchestra of the Americas was still active in the early 2000s, releasing Signature Series: Romancing the Screen in 2004. The early designation of Prieto's orchestra as the Youth Orchestra of the Americas may have stemmed from the need to distinguish the new group from the earlier one, which was still active, and dropping the word "Youth" likely signified that the earlier orchestra had become defunct by the late 2000s decade. ~ James Manheim
