Acerca de Kevin Krauter
As a solo artist, Kevin Krauter makes wistful, dreamy lo-fi pop nuanced by subtly intricate rhythms. After joining Bloomington, Indiana indie rock band Hoops as bassist in 2014, he released his full-length solo debut, Toss Up, in 2018.
Indiana native Kevin Krauter's family was involved in the local theater scene, and he performed in several stage musicals in his youth. He went on to play in bands in high school, but he only started writing and recording as a student at Ball State University. Partly influenced by folksingers of the '60s and '70s, his first EP, 2015's Magnolia, was recorded in his dorm room.
In the meantime, Krauter had joined Hoops, originally the solo ambient/noise project of Drew Auscherman. It expanded into a full band in 2014 with the addition of Krauter on bass, Keagan Beresford on guitar, and James Allen on drums. Their Tapes #2 EP became an indie music blog sensation when it was uploaded to YouTube in 2015. Heavily influenced by British acts Prefab Sprout and the Clientele, their murky, melodic sound also drew comparisons to contemporaries like DIIV, Ariel Pink, and Real Estate. They released two more tapes, then signed with Fat Possum Records for the mid-2016 release of their eponymous debut EP proper. At that time, their initial tapes were also made available digitally. Krauter released the still mostly acoustic EP Changes in late 2016.
Hoops' full-length debut was recorded partly in their first studio sessions and partly in Krauter's parents' basement with Woods' Jarvis Taveniere. Titled Routines, it arrived in May 2017. The album made an appearance on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, and Fat Possum issued the catch-up compilation Tapes #1-3 that November.
In between tours with Hoops, Krauter spent long nights recording material for his first album at home, forging textured, full-band arrangements that included vintage keyboards. Later recorded at Russian Recording in Bloomington, he was joined in the studio by Ben Lumsdaine, who engineered and co-produced the tracks and played drums on half the songs. Envisioned as a poppier album but still marked by rhythmic intricacy and a hazy, lo-fi veneer reminiscent of his work with Hoops, his full-length debut, Toss Up, arrived via Bayonet Records in 2018. That year, he toured with groups including Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Beach Fossils, and Sunflower Bean.
With Lumsdaine on drums, Hoops reconvened in 2019, releasing the song "They Say" in November. Krauter's second album, Full Hand, arrived on Bayonet in February 2020. ~ Marcy Donelson
