b. 19 October 1960, Paris, France. Pilc began playing piano at the age of 10 and is largely self-taught. He worked extensively with French and visiting jazz musicians, among them John Abercrombie, Richard Bona, Michael Brecker, André Céccarelli, Roy Haynes, Daniel Humair, Dave Liebman, Michel Portal, Aldo Romano, Martial Solal, and Jean Toussaint. Pilc has toured extensively, working in venues all around the world including visits to clubs, concert halls and festivals in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the UK and Eire. For a spell he was musical director and pianist for Harry Belafonte. He first played in New York City in 1995, working in many well-known clubs, among them the Blue Note, Birdland, the Knitting Factory and Sweet Basil. Later, he made New York his home. In 2003, Cardinal Points received considerable acclaim with JazzTimes magazine selecting it to be one of the Top 50 Critics Picks Of The Year. Fiery, dramatic and daring, Pilc is a commanding soloist. He is also a noted composer, having written music for films and also many jazz compositions, including the extended work ‘Trio Sonata’, included on 2003’s Cardinal Points.
