Acerca de Jay Hoggard
Jay Hoggard's combined African, African-American and American musical perspectives in his approach to vibes, sometimes playing in a swinging, relaxed and bluesy manner, other times increasing his rhythmic pace and speed. He's also occasionally dabbled in fusion and jazz-rock, as well as symphonic and classical music. Hoggard initially studied piano and saxophone, then switched to vibes. He had private studies with Lynn Oliver. Though he began at Wesleyan as a philosophy student, Hoggard transferred to the ethnomusicology department. He toured Europe in the early '70s with Jimmy Garrison and Clifford Thornton, and joined a group at Yale with Anthony Davis, Leo Smith and Pheeroan Ak Laff. Hoggard studied for a summer in Tanzania learning the balo, a West African xylophone, during the mid-'70s. He taught at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven after graduating from Wesleyan, then moved to New York in 1977. He recorded with Chico Freeman in 1978, then did a more pop and fusion-oriented session the next year. Hoggard led his own groups and worked with Davis, Sam Rivers, Cecil Taylor, and James Newton among others in the '80s and '90s. He's recorded as a leader for India Navigation, GRP/Arista, Contemporary, and Muse. He has some sessions available on CD.
