Francois Van Coke
Acerca de Francois Van Coke
Francois Van Coke (born Francois Badenhorst) is a South African vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist who rose to fame in the aughts and 2010s as the frontman for the Afrikaans alternative rock/punk groups Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel. He launched a successful solo career in 2015 and has since gone on to issue acclaimed albums like Hierdie is die Lewe (2017) and Dagdrome in Suburbia (2019), as well as to host his own television program, Die Van Coke Show.
Raised in a strict Christian household, the Belleville-native cycled through a series of bands, including the faith-based AS180, before co-founding Fokofpolisiekar in 2003. Employing a versatile mix of punk, acoustic pop, and hardcore-tinged alternative rock, the band's incendiary name (often shortened to Polisiekar or FPK to evade censoring) was chosen to shock the primarily conservative Afrikaner community. Much to their surprise, Fokofpolisiekar found almost immediate success, and have since gone on to issue a string of chart-topping albums and helped pave the way for the success of boundary-pushing South African acts like Die Antwoord.
After the group went on hiatus in 2007, Badenhorst formed Van Coke Kartel alongside Fokofpolisiekar bassist Wynand Myburgh and drummer Justin Kruger. After dropping an eponymous debut EP, the group began a speedy ascension that saw them become one of the country's most successful rock bands, with albums like Skop, Skiet en Donner (2010) and Bloed, Sweet & Trane (2013) helping to land them multiple MK Music, Ghoema, and Sama Awards. In 2015 Badenhorst released his eponymous debut solo album, which featured the chart-topping single "Toe Vind Ek Jou (feat. Karen Zoid)." A sophomore effort, Hierdie is die Lewe, arrived in 2017, followed by Francois van Coke en Vriende, a collaborative EP with Die Heuwels Fantasties, Early B, Laudo Liebenberg, and Jack Parow. In 2018 Badenhorst began hosting the television program Die Van Coke Show, a hybrid game and talk show, and in 2019 he released his third studio long-player, Dagdrome in Suburbia. ~ James Christopher Monger
