Acerca de Drakeo The Ruler
Though Drakeo the Ruler has been a dominant force in L.A.’s rap scene since emerging in 2015 with I Am Mr. Mosely, the MC, born Darrell Caldwell in 1993, has spent much of his come up behind bars. Caldwell’s early mixtapes were indebted to the icy reserve of Chicago drill, but interest from local record producer and rapper Mustard led to a collaboration on 2015’s “Mr. Get Dough,” and Drakeo has been rapping over bouncy West Coast G-funk synths ever since. Even a stint in jail in 2017 couldn’t stop him. In fact, it inspired him to record his most groundbreaking LP, Cold Devil, in just 10 days after he was released. Jail time changed the rapper, who was now spitting rhymes without inhibitions and going after haters with a dread-inducing flow he eventually named “nervous music.” Cold Devil, which includes hits like “Big Banc Uchies” and “Flu Flamming,” established the Ruler as one of the most creative stylists in rap, bouncing around minimal beats with reckless abandon. After another incarceration from 2018 through 2020, Drakeo was finally released after a series of questionable charges were dropped, including a gang enhancement attached to his rap crew, the Stinc Team. Regardless of his location, though, the Ruler can’t be stopped—his first of three 2020 LPs, Thank You for Using GTL, was recorded over a jailhouse phone. The mix is fuzzy, but Drakeo the Ruler pierces through the cacophony with the confidence of the City of Angels’ next king.
