Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist Cœur de pirate—born Béatrice Martin—got her start playing keys in a hardcore outfit called December Strikes First.
∙ Her 2008 self-titled debut reached an international audience after the song “Ensemble” was featured in a viral video that aired on Good Morning America. ∙ “Commes des enfants,” her breakout hit, won a Victoire—the French equivalent to the Grammy Award—and her music regularly tops European charts. ∙ In 2015, “Carry On” was her first song to hit Billboard’s Hot 100 in Canada, as well as her first to be written in English, a nod to her growing US audience. ∙ Martin was part of Armistice, an indie supergroup with singer Jay Malinowski of ska rock outfit Bedouin Soundclash and several members of punk band The Bronx. ∙ The fifth season soundtrack of the TV series Trauma is composed entirely of her covers of songs by such artists as Amy Winehouse and The Rolling Stones. ∙ Child of Light video game creators said that they asked her to compose the game’s score because of how her “fresh, romantic, and optimistic” sound would evoke emotion in players.
