Siblings Hezron and Hazrenol Rayner were propelled to worldwide stardom after putting their roots front and centre. Hailing from the rural village of Kg Nuntunan Apin-Apin in Sabah, Atmosfera had varying degrees of success with Malaysia-neutral singles such as “Berakhirlah Sudah” and “Tak Tau Malu”, written in standardised Bahasa and composed with Malay pop tropes. But 2018 smash “Original Sabahan” is unabashedly proud of the duo’s origins—it’s sung in their native Dusun language and features overt cultural cues. They might just make Aramaiti! a global toast.
